Walmart Clown Commercial – Funny Or Creepy?
Walmart is going out on a limb with a new clown commercial that aired during the NFL conference finals. In the recent past, Walmart’s marketing strategy was relatively simple: Stream in-store ads and de-clutter stores. But the Walmart clown ad above is actually edgy, a new move for the traditionally mellow advertiser.
The first time we saw this Walmart clown commercial, we burst out laughing. Happened the second and third time, too.
But we’ve heard others say the exact opposite. “Clowns are creepy!” they say. “Even creepier when they start yelling for no apparent reason!”
Ok, so let’s analyze the commercial. It’s a birthday party for a kid. The mom is all happy that they saved money by buying the food, decorations and supplies at Walmart. In fact, they saved so much money that they had enough left over to buy a clown costume.
Dad dons the clown costume and is all excited about being the birthday party entertainment. You can just hear him thinking, “Let’s do this!” But when he enters the room, he steps smack on a toy unicorn and the horn skewers his foot. Clown yells wildly, scaring all the kids from the room.
Walmart has hit America’s funnybone with “Clown”, a commercial shown during the Vikings vs Saints football game on Sunday night. Time for Dad to make some funny, says the amateur clown. Out in the lounge it’s a birthday party for the kids. Mum’s telling her friends how much money she and her husband have saved by shopping at Walmart. They even saved enough for a clown… Words are lost as the clown steps into the room. What happens next is a bit like America’s Funniest Home Videos. It’s either very funny or very painful to watch…
